You’ve Got Something to Prove
Let’s face it. People are using the Internet in record numbers to find the service or product you offer. The whole landscape was different just a few short years ago, but now - today’s consumer window shops in the front of their monitor, instead of driving around. To make matters worse, your typical prospect will be looking based upon price.
Can it get any worse?
Sure! You can have a crummy website. Most of your competitors do. The trick is to understand that you have something to prove. Not that you are the cheapest, but rather that you are the obvious choice to do business with - REGARDLESS OF PRICE!
How can we go about doing this? The first step is to throw away the notion that you or your 6 year old daughter can build you a website to represent your company. The odds are many of your competitors are doing that already. And guess what! It isn’t working for them either.
You’ve got something to prove, and it starts with your virtual storefront. NOTE: I am using the term “virtual storefront” loosely; I am not speaking solely to those who sell their products online! It is up to you to make your website sing to your prospects. Get rid of the stuffy professional speak that it has on there now, and be memorable. Of course, there is a balance of professionalism and being memorable. Years ago, I spoke with a computer repair man who had an obnoxiously loud website that he built himself. It was loud and obnoxious on purpose. Why? So he will be remembered.
Pretty please, don’t follow in the foot steps of this individual! It will cause harm to you and your business. The Internet is filled with enough blinking lights and dancing baby icons, thank you very much!
Yes, be memorable - be the one who sticks out in an exciting and dynamic way. Search the Internet for creative ideas and brainstorm with your team about what your prospects are yearning for when they are doing research themselves in the comfort of their home. Make them realize that your company IS the answer to their wants, dreams and desires. A plain and cheap looking website with generic copy is not the way to do it.
