The Disgruntled Prospect

A few months back, I got a call from the business owner of a computer parts shop. The phone rang …
“Hello, this is Tanner. How my I help you?” I answered.
A fairly predictable response as far as sales inquiries go came on the other line:
“Hi there, My name is Jason and I got your name from a friend. Your company did his website, and I was very impressed with it. I would like to talk to you about having Tanner Creative build a website for my company.”
I walked Jason through the standard questionnaire over the phone that is used to help determine the scope of the project, and spoke with him about all of the options he has, as well as recommendations. After getting off the phone with Jason, and working up a quote, I called him back to go over everything.
“Bottom line, what is this gonna cost me, and how long is it gonna take?” He asked quickly.
“Based upon your needs and my recommendations, I would quote $1,600 and can finish it up within 3-4 weeks.” I answered.
Highly interested, yet skeptical, Jason began to lament to me about his previous experience with the first web designer he hired.
“Some time last year I hired a web designer in town,” he started - “…things started off smoothly. Until he got the down payment! He assured me of a great looking website that would show my customers why they should go with me. I was quoted $3,500 and was told it would take 2 months. It has now been 7 months, and it isn’t finished! 7 months, and all he had to do was design the website and post up 10 pages. Thats it. It took 7 months for my web designer to build my website. Only few pages are now up, and it sucks! I wouldn’t dream of pointing customers or prospects to show it! Heck, I didn’t even get to see the design - it looks like my friend’s third grade son put it together. He is holding $1,750 of mine and I likely will not see a penny of it back. How is it that you can quote half the time, and for half the price?”

Week One
Jason took the next step, signed the contract and wrote a check for the down payment to get started with Tanner Creative. 5 days later, I sent over the layout draft. “You nailed it!” Jason said. “I love this design - I approve - what next?!”
Week Two
After coding out the layout Jason fell in love with, I added in the Tanner Create Control Center - the system used to give Jason the flexibility to add pages, edit pages and bring in graphics, video, audio, and more. I sent it over for his approval via email. The next day, I got a phone call from Jason.
“Hello, this is Tanner. How may I help you?”
“Tanner, this is Jason - I LOVE the Control Center! Log on to the test development you setup for me - I have already started adding text, graphics and video! I have shown this to my wife, and about 4 friends. I was up until 3am last night playing around with it. This is GREAT!”
Week Three
Jason continued to praise the system, and during the next week and a half, we continued to put together the website and work through some questions he had about running the Control Center together. “I cannot believe how easy this is to use, Tanner.” Jason said. “I am about as dumb as a monkey when it comes to computers, but this has been a great tool.” He continued.
“I’m glad to hear that, Jason!” I responded. “It looks like the website is completely finished now, and ready to go live. Would you like for me to flip the switch?”
“I still cannot believe how smooth the process was, Tanner. Here we are 3 1/2 weeks after we met and we are about to go live with my finished website - something my previous web designer could not / would not do in 7 months, and for twice the price! Please, by all means, go live with the website. I am DEFINITELY going to be sending my friends your way.”
